Synopsis
The Imperfect Pearl was a music-drama celebrating the extraordinary life and music of one of the baroque era’s most overlooked and under-rated composers, Domenico Zipoli. For more than 200 years the life and music of Italian composer Domenico Zipoli was shrouded in mystery, until in 1972 more than 5,000 pieces of his music were found in a Bolivian church toilet. The Imperfect Pearl, or Perola Barroca (the original term for Baroque music), is the specially written story based on the fragments gathered of his journey from the music salons of Rome to the rainforests and Jesuit Missions of South America in the year 1717. This Baroque Brothers Grimm-style fairytale was an innovative project that followed the journey of the seventeenth century composer from Rome to the rainforests of South America. The Imperfect Pearl or Perola Barroca described the dissonances of Zipoli’s life and the Baroque music that drove him.
